On Sunday morning my friend and I woke up really early and went to get her a Cuban cell phone. On the way back I told her we’d take a Coco Taxi, an experience in itself. Before we crossed the street to where the taxis were waiting I instructed her not to say even one word in a foreign language. She nodded and smiled. As I expected, as soon as they saw us yumas [foreigners] the price got jacked up by 2 CUC, but after a short negotiation it went back down again. It’s never really about the money. I’ve been living every summer in Cuba for the past six years and it feels like home. It annoys me when I know I am being scammed. My friend was smiling from ear to ear as we were driving through the streets of Havana in an open taxi. The world was smiling at us and she was in heaven.
We got back to the hotel and grabbed the rest of the group. I was leading a tour in Cuba showing them “real Cuba.” I took them to see an Afro-Cuban show of the Orishas in midday. They got to see Rumba – Guaguanco and Columbia – and some of the Orishas – Eleggua, Yemaya, Obatala, Oggun and Ochun. I explained to them what they were seeing a

nd who each character was. Witnessing these kinds of performances was a unique experience for them. Not every person gets to see such authentic shows only two days after landing in Cuba. It was as if their best friend met them there and showed them around. In Cuba you really have to know what you are looking for and where to find it. Cuba has no city guides and proper websites to guide you. And this is why I wrote My Seductive Cuba – to help people have an amazing traveling experience that is right under their nose when they arrive.
We were standing watching the show completely at awe. They were floating on air. I have seen these shows so many times yet they move me deeply. The depth of the art and the connection to the moment are so strong in Cuba that when I am not there I crave it all.

It was so hot that my back was dripping of sweat. A Cuban guy came behind me and moved his finger slowly up my back as if he was making love to me. He said: estas sudando [you are sweating] in a seductive voice. He hit my heart deep inside and made it tremble. Very smooth, I thought to myself. But I did not smile to give him the satisfaction. Cubans are masters of seduction. I turned my head back slightly to see who it was and answered Si [yes], then turned back to face the show. He asked me what my name was and I answered, still only turning my head a bit. The Cuban guy then mentioned his name and forced an introduction. I shook his hand instead of a kiss and a hug on purpose and faced the front again. I smiled inside. He made me feel so desired and beautiful but I knew what he was doing. Next he asked me in a charming voice: no quieres tomar una cervecita conmigo? [don’t you want to drink a little beer with me?]. I turned back to face him and replied: No, Gracias [No, thank you] and turned my back to him. He said: Seguro? [Are you sure?], and I replied: Seguro! [I am sure!], not even turning. He asked again: Seguro?, and I replied Seguro! He added is a cute way: Seguro? What a persistent bugger, I thought to myself. At that point I turned back to face him fully and said: Dale papi, ya mi vida, esta seguro [Come on papi, enough my life, it’s for sure.] Sweet and yet firm and final. Cubans taught me how to do this, how to reject a Cuban man without hurting his ego. I kept staring at him waiting for him to accept my No. He smiled a sweet smile and looked at me like he just wanted me more. Then he let it go with a charismatic smile. I faced the front to watch the show and smiled to myself. Goddamn it, he got to my heart. Cubans are so good at this. I felt so good.

It’s really hard to explain how someone can be so pushy yet by the end of it I can feel so gorgeous. I love the fact that men in Cuba tell me every morning, afternoon and evening how beautiful I look. I could live like this for the rest of my life. And if you think that this is a story for women only, Cuban women can be just as seductive – the way they look at you with desire, the way they might touch your shoulder softly as they ask you for something, or the voice they use, are all part of it. Cuba is a seductive island.

Later on that day I saw one of my best Cuban friends, Israel. I told him the story and he cracked up when I demonstrated the whole game. He loves it when I get all Cuban on him. We had a good laugh.
Cuba always reminds me to play and have fun, to take life with a light-hearted attitude and enjoy the moment.

Author Bio

CHEN LIZRA started traveling to Cuba in 2005 in order to train with the island’s best professional dancers. Each year she finds more excuses to visit Cuba, discovering the culture from within and hanging out with her close friends.
Chen grew up in Israel and later moved to Canada. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in marketing, which allowed her to turn her passion — Cuban dance and music — into an inspiring lifestyle for others through her company, Latidos Productions®.
Chen was selected as the Student Entrepreneur Champion for British Columbia in 2008. The following year, she was nominated as one of the “Women of Distinction in Vancouver,” and in 2010, she was named “Woman of the Month” by Modern Working Woman Magazine. About the book

Enough books have been written about Cuba to fill an entire library, but few take the approach Chen Lizra does with “My Seductive Cuba.” Deeply personal and always engaging, Lizra — an Israeli-born dance instructor and entrepreneur now living in Canada — fuses history and politics with her real-life experiences among the people of this often-visited but little-understood island. The result is a moving portrayal of Cuba on the verge of historic change. Packed with practical information on where to go in Cuba, what to pack and the best ways to get there, “My Seductive Cuba” also helps readers ferret out persistent opportunists while finding Havana’s best reggaetón, flamenco, jazz and salsa clubs. A glossary of Cuban slang and a description of the Santería religion — along with a vivid chapter titled “Getting Possessed” — makes Lizra’s humorous travel guide even more compelling. This is one book you won’t want to be without, even if you don’t plan on going anywhere!
